Judo federation removes titles from Vladimir Putin, the Russian oligarch

The International Judo Federations has removed the titles and positions held by Vladimir Putin and a longtime Kremlin-supporting oligarchy.

“The International Judokan Federation announces that Mr Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and Mr Arkady Anatolyevich Rotenberg have been removed for all positions they hold in the International Judokan Federation.”

Putin’s honorary presidency has been suspended because of the ongoing war in Ukraine. He is an avid judo player and attended the sport at London’s 2012 Olympic Games.

Rotenberg is a longtime friend of Putin from his home city of St. Petersburg. Petersburg was a member of the International Judo Federation (IJF) executive committee as “development director”.

Following the decision by the International Judokwai Federation to strip Russian President Vladimir Putin of his honorary blackbelt, World Taekwondo has followed suit.

Putin was given the belt in 2013.

“World Taekwon Do strongly condemns the brutal attacks in Ukraine, which go contrary to the World Taekwon Do vision of ‘peace is more precious than triumph’ and the World Taekiwon Do values of respect and tolerance.”

Another billionaire is Oleg Deripaska, whose fortune is estimated at $12 billion. He founded Rusal, one of the world’s biggest aluminum producers.

Vladimir Potanin is another Russian billionaire. He has a fortune of $9.4 billion according to Forbes. He owns the majority of shares in Norilsk Nickel, one of the world’s leading nickel mining companies.

Vladimir Yumashev is also among the top 10 wealthiest Russians. According to Forbes, he has a fortune of $7.2 billion. He owns Alrosa, the world’s largest diamond producer.

Other oligarchs include Roman Abramovich ($6.5 billion), Gennady Timchenko ($6.3 billion), Boris Berezovsky ($1.9 billion), Viktor Vekselberg ($1.8 billion), Vladimir Lisin ($1.6 billion), Leonid Mikhelson ($1.5 billion), Alexei Mordashov ($1.3 billion) and Andrei Melnichenko ($1.2 billion).

How do oligarchs get so rich?

They can be successful businessmen or politicians. Some become billionaires through natural resources like oil and gas. Others make money through manufacturing or finance.

Some oligarchs use their wealth to buy political power. This includes buying up media outlets and influencing elections.

Many oligarchs are closely linked to the Kremlin. The Kremlin uses them to help promote its own agenda.

Why does the Russian government want to remove Putin from the IJF?

Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. It continues to support separatists in eastern Ukraine.

President Putin has been accused of supporting pro-Russian rebels in Ukraine.
